Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the ASHT online Journal Club, the learner will:

  • Find the established research question(s) and identify the rationale for the question(s).
  • Define the purpose(s) of the article as described by the author(s).
  • Classify the evidence level of the article according to Sackett's hierarchy.
  • Identify the application of the author’s conclusion to clinical practice.
  • Identify the limitations of the article’s outcome as it applies to the existing body of evidence and to clinical practice.

In order to participate in the Journal Club Chat, members must access their Journal Hand Therapy membership to retrieve articles that are being discussed each month.

To do so, please visit www.asht.org/journal and access your monthly articles as shown below:

Introduction and Standard Questions

In an effort to improve participation and productivity, we have created five standard questions which will be used for each monthly Journal Club Chat. The five questions will be the same each month. The questions are as follows:

  • What is the research topic/problem?
  • What is the purpose of the study?
  • What is the level of evidence? What qualifies it to be that level?
  • What were the results of the study?
  • Will this change your practice?  Why or why not and how?

Required Participation Criteria

In order to meet compliance requirements for issuing continuing education credit for Journal Club Chat participation, we are instituting completion requirements as outlined below.

All participants will be required to complete a five question quiz to meet the requirement for assessment of learning outcomes.

  • Participants will be emailed a link to access the quiz within two to five days after the chat.
  • Once the link is sent, participants will have a few days to complete the quiz.  The deadline for completion will be clearly communicated.
  • Within seven days of the deadline, certificates will be issued.

To meet the attendance requirement for awarding continuing education credit:

  • All participants will be required to log-in to the chat within 10 minutes of the start time to be eligible for the free CE credit.  Those who log-in more than 10 minutes after the start time are welcome to participate, but they will not be sent the quiz to earn free CE credit.
  • All participants will be required to actively engage with the discussion.  The chat transcript shows and the online chat system monitors those who are idle on the chat.  Those who are idle for more than 15 minutes will not be sent the quiz to earn free CE credit.

It is the goal of the Journal Club to maximize the teaching/learning experience and enhance critical appraisal skills. We value your participation and hope you find the new format helpful in enhancing your research skills.
