Journal Club: Get Comfortable with the Research

Posted by Beverly Flood Bass, OTD, OTR/L, CLT 02/14/2016

Journal Club is an accessible way for members to stay current in hand therapy research. We all hear about the importance of applying evidence-based practice; however, it is a process that can feel overwhelming at times. This is where there is value in ASHT’s Journal Club. The chats encourage participants to become comfortable with reading the research, as well as going a step beyond by facilitating critical appraisal and application of the findings.
The process of the Journal Club chat is a fun and unintimidating way to engage with the research. The moderator walks the group through a series of questions to examine each monthly article. All members are welcome to participate. We have had everyone from research newbies to article authors attend. The variety of participant experience lends itself to a productive learning environment. The chats are very interactive, and the experience is enhanced by member participation.
Journal Club provides free continuing education credits for participation, increasing the value even more; however, the greatest benefit is actively engaging in the research, and working with the evidence base available, to strengthen our profession and improve our practice outcomes. We hope to “see” you on our next chat!
The next ASHT Journal Club will take place Monday, February 29, 2016, at 9 p.m. ET. To learn more about this exclusive member benefit, please visit our Journal Club page. Not a member? Find out more about ASHT membership.
