Hand Therapy Review Course: Spring 2014

Posted by Nora E. Barrett, MS, OTR/L, CHT 04/17/2014

During the weekend of April 11-13, 80 eager occupational and physical therapists from across the country came to St. Louis for the three-day Hand Therapy Review Course. The course faculty, comprised of therapists local to the St. Louis area and ASHT volunteers from the midwest and east coast, presented a day of upper extremity anatomy and kinesiology that included a cadaver lab on Friday and two days of lectures on common conditions, diagnoses and treatment modalities of the upper extremity on Saturday and Sunday. Each weekend day finished with practice review questions for the course participants to test their knowledge from the material presented and cases to put the information together for immediate "take-home" benefit as well.

Spring 2014 Hand Therapy Review Course faculty:
Rebecca von der Heyde, Valeri Calhoun, Rhonda Powell, Nora Barrett, Rachel Pigott, Susanne Higgins
The overwhelming majority of course attendees are preparing to sit for the CHT exam in May or November, and others were using the course as a comprehensive review. Regardless of their intent, a massive amount of anatomical and clinical information was covered in the beautiful facilities of the Washington University School of Medicine and the Program in Occupational Therapy. Seven graduate students from the Program in Occupational Therapy volunteered their time to assist the course faculty with AV needs, participant registration, cadaver dissection and preparation, and then attended the entire weekend course.
Students, course participants and faculty shared experiences and all were encouraged by the overall response, thoughtful questions and interaction of the entire group throughout the weekend. ASHT is grateful to Washington University School of Medicine Program in Occupational Therapy for their generous hospitality.

ASHT will hold another Hand Therapy Review Course in the fall, and registration will open soon. To be placed on the waitlist, please email education@asht.org with the subject line "2014 HTRC Autumn Wait List."
