Locum Tenens for Physical Therapists (June 12, 2017)

Beginning June 13, 2017, PTs in health professional shortage areas (HPSA), medically underserved areas (MUV) or CMS-designated rural areas will be able to have another licensed PT cover their Medicare patients for them during illness, maternity leave, vacation or continuing medical education and submit the bills to Medicare. The Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) will continue to pay the practice or regular PT for the services and the PT will work out reimbursement for the substitute therapist, a practice previously only accepted for physicians. This “reciprocal billing and fee-for-time arrangement” will be covered under Medicare Part B.
