The wrist and digits share an intricate relationship with each other. The position of the wrist influences functioning of the digital flexors, extensors and intrinsics despite DRUG and radio-ulnar joint being inherently unstable. The excursion of the musculotendinous structures in relation to the ligamentous contribution for stability as well as mobility produces a marvellous kinematic chain reaction. The unique mechanism of both flexion and extension of the fingers are truly dependent upon the motion of the phalanges over metacarpals, whereas the mechanism of thumb opposition and extension gives the entire hand functional ability for co-ordination and strength. Any disturbance occurring along the entire course of anatomy produces an altered behavior of the digits causing pathological disturbance of the kinematic chain. The presentation discusses the normal physiology of motion and the details of pathomechanics. The presentation includes: fluoroscopy, animation, cadaver dissection and video clips of normal and abnormal kinematic chain to simplify understanding of the wrist and hand kinematics.
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
- Understand the anatomy of the wrist and digits.
- Understand the normal mechanism of wrist flexion/extension and deviation.
- Understand the normal mechanism of finger flexion and extension.
- Understand the normal thumb opposition and extension.
- Understand how to treat pathologies based on clinical case presentations.
