Update from California State Chapter President, Cathy Noble, OTR, CHT
June 12, 2008
We have been active in California with Chapter meetings and other activities. We started out January 2008 with installation of the new board members. Prem Lalwani stepped down from the President's position after 15 years of dedication work to the Chapter. He has been instrumental in maintaining a high level of competence in the San Francisco Bay area for Certified Hand Therapists. We honored him with a plaque of appreciation at our monthly meeting in February. He continues to help out at all of the meetings and is an integral part of our group.
The following were elected to the board, under the direction of Judy Ivan:
President: Cathryn Noble, OTR/L, CHT
VP: Saba Kamal, OTR/L, CHT
Secretary: Monina Capuoca, OTR/L, CHT
Treasurer: Susan Clark, OTR/L, CHT
The California Chapter normally has 10-11 meetings a year where three CEUs are earned for participation in the 6:30 to 9:30 lecture time frame. There is normally a light dinner provided from a vendor who presents a new modality appropriate for hand therapy. There are typically 2-3 speakers who talk 1-2 hours on various hand therapy related topics. We have a digital projector for the group meetings, and the speakers often bring a laptop with their zip drive for their PowerPoint presentation.
This month, we celebrated Hand Therapy Month at Michaels, a club house at the Shoreline in Sunnyvale. Maragaret Phillips, who is our certificate preparer, received a proclamation from the City of San Jose declaring June 8-12 officially Hand Therapy Week. Monina and Saba shared their efforts at the San Jose library where they helped to arrange an art competition with hands as the theme. This event was sponsored by the California Chapter.
Dr. John Eggelston presented a talk on extensor mechanisms both to the group of 35 at Michaels, and it was simultaneously broadcasted on the Internet. Just prior to Dr. Eggelston's presentation we enjoyed a lecture live on the Web from Ontario Canada by Shrikant J. Chinchalkar. Saba Kamal was intrumental in organization the Web interaction, and members who viewed online were provided certificates of attendance. The hope is that this will be a way to bridge the large California area of northern and southern groups.
Update from Pennsylvania State Chapter President, Terry Taylor, OTR/L, CHT
June 13, 2008
The PA State Chapter hosted the CHT Review Course in Pittsburgh, June 6-8, 2008. The course included a reception that was attended by about 25 guests.
We promoted ASHT and the upcoming ASHT meeting in Boston, and now I plan to set out to generate a buzz and recruit volunteers to organize the next event. There has been discussion in the past about reaching out to West Virginia hand therapists as well since they don't have their own State Chapter.
