Experienced Practitioner Retreat:

Rehabilitation of the Elbow and Wrist in the Athlete

Presenters

The retreat will feature two surgeons and two therapists, who will speak to wrist and elbow injuries from knowledgeable perspectives.

Mark Bagg, MD

Mark Bagg

Dr. Mark Bagg is an orthopaedic surgeon in San Antonio, TX. He received his medical education at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and his orthopaedic residency training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Dr. Bagg has gained experience with the upper extremity in numerous capacities. His first assignment as an orthopaedic surgeon was with the Joint Task Force Bravo in Honduras, after which he returned to Walter Reed and Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He later became Chief of Hand Surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Bagg went on to become Chief of Hand Surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Service and Residency Program Director at BAMC, and eventually served numerous tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as the Orthopaedic Consultant to the Surgeon General US Army. Dr. Bagg oversaw the opening of the Department of Defense’s second Amputee Care Center and the Center for the Intrepid, where he eventually became the director until his retirement from the military.

Dr. Bagg has extensive experience in surgical reconstruction of complex upper extremity injuries, soft tissue coverage and burn reconstruction, which he has brought to the Hand Center of San Antonio. Dr. Bagg is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Bagg enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife, Karen and their five children.

Dr. Bagg will be presenting: “Wrist Injuries in the Athlete: A Surgeon’s Perspective.”


Christopher L. Forthman, MD

Christopher L. Forthman, MD

Christopher L. Forthman, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. Dr. Forthman earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He completed his residency at Harvard and served as a Chief Resident with an emphasis on complex shoulder, hand and elbow surgery. Dr. Forthman performed a Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship at The Curtis National Hand Center at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Forthman is a distinguished fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Dr. Forthman will be presenting, “Elbow Injuries in the Athlete: A Surgeon’s Perspective.”


Ron Johnson, PT, SCS, LAT, ATC, CSCS

Ron Johnson

Ron Johnson is an orthopedic and sports physical therapist for Excel Sports Therapy in Shiner, Texas. As a physical therapist, athletic trainer, and certified strength and conditioning specialist, Ron specializes in all aspects of care of shoulder, elbow, and knee disorders seen in the athletic population. He has worked extensively with a variety of adolescent, high school, collegiate, and professional athletes with an emphasis on throwing injuries in baseball players. Ron has also published nine journal articles and book chapters related to sports rehabilitation. Ron actively speaks at various seminars and national meetings, with over 70 past presentations in his field.

Ron Johnson will be presenting, “Rehabilitation of the Elbow in the Injured Athlete: Therapist Lecture and Case Discussions”


Paige E. Kurtz, MS, OTR/L, CHT

Paige Kurtz

Paige is a CHT working with In Motion Physical Therapy and Sports Performance in Hampton, VA. She has over 20 years experience working in many different areas of hand and upper extremity rehabilitation, ranging from complex/traumatic injuries to arthritis. Paige has worked with different levels of athletes including adolescent and club sports participants, weekend warriors, wounded warriors, and college and professional athletes. She is also adjunct faculty with the Old Dominion University Physical Therapy program, has published several book chapters, and is also a past president of ASHT.
